How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The FLRW metric is smooth Lorentzian; the comoving field is unit timelike and cosmic time parametrizes comoving curves by proper time; the slices carry the scaled spatial metric
Statement
Let be an FLRW model datum with conversion constant , with spacetime , metric and comoving congruence (FLRW model data: warped product metric, cosmic time, comoving congruence, scale factor and Hubble parameter, The constant-curvature spatial model of a homogeneous cosmology). Then:
(a) The field is a smooth Lorentzian metric of signature on , and satisfies at every point; hence is a time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold (Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model, Lorentz forms of inertia (3,1,0) on a 4-dimensional real vector space).
(b) The comoving congruence is a smooth future-directed unit timelike vector field on : and at every point (Timelike, null, spacelike and causal vectors of a Lorentz vector space). Its maximal integral curve through is on . Reparametrizing by cosmic time gives the comoving curve on ; each is a future timelike worldline whose parameter is its proper time up to an additive constant: for with , the proper-time increment between and is (Timelike worldlines, proper time, length and four-velocity on a Lorentzian four-manifold, Proper time is well defined and reparametrization invariant; the four-velocity is its proper-time tangent). The physical four-velocity of a comoving observer is , with .
(c) The congruence is -orthogonal to the spatial slices: for every , the slice inclusion , , is a smooth embedding, the pullback is a Riemannian metric on , and for every . Moreover the slice metric has Ricci curvature and constant sectional curvature (Constant metric rescaling preserves the connection and Ricci tensor and inversely scales scalar and sectional curvature, Constant-curvature three-manifolds: equivalence of constant sectional curvature, the tensor identity and the Ricci condition).
Facts & Assumptions
Given: An FLRW model datum with , the product , the field of FLRW model data: warped product metric, cosmic time, comoving congruence, scale factor and Hubble parameter with components , , in product charts, and .
Component functions of a smooth symmetric -tensor field in the charts of one smooth atlas of define a smooth -tensor field on , and components in different charts are related by the covariant transformation law (Smooth covariant 2-tensor fields on a smooth manifold, Chart independence and the transformation law of a smooth covariant 2-tensor field).
A symmetric bilinear form on a four-dimensional real vector space is a Lorentz form when it is nondegenerate and has inertia (Lorentz forms of inertia (3,1,0) on a 4-dimensional real vector space). Inertia is computed from the numbers of positive, negative and zero diagonal entries in any diagonalizing basis and is independent of that basis (Positive and negative definiteness, the inertia , rank , and signature of a real symmetric bilinear or quadratic form).
A time orientation of is a smooth vector field with everywhere; a nonzero causal vector is future-directed when (Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model, Timelike, null, spacelike and causal vectors of a Lorentz vector space).
A curve is a future timelike worldline when and ; its proper-time increment is with (Timelike worldlines, proper time, length and four-velocity on a Lorentzian four-manifold), the value being independent of the admissible partition (Proper time is well defined and reparametrization invariant; the four-velocity is its proper-time tangent clause 1). If on , then (The second fundamental theorem: if is differentiable on with and is integrable, then ).
The maximal integral curves of a smooth vector field through the points of its domain exist and are unique (Through each point there is a unique maximal integral curve, Integral curves of a vector field); a smooth vector field is a smooth section of the tangent bundle (A smooth vector field is a smooth section of the tangent bundle). A differentiable real function on an interval with zero derivative is constant (A function continuous on an interval whose derivative vanishes at every interior point of is constant on ; consequently two such functions with the same derivative differ by a constant), so solving and zero spatial velocity gives the displayed integral curves in product charts.
Since is an open interval, it has the restricted smooth structure from (An open subset of a smooth manifold has a canonical restricted smooth structure), and the FLRW product charts are smooth. For fixed , the slice map has coordinate form , so it is a smooth embedding and . Define its pullback by ; its components are therefore . This is a smooth symmetric positive-definite form, hence a Riemannian metric, because and is Riemannian ( and smooth maps between smooth manifolds, Riemannian metric and riemannian manifold).
The Ricci tensor of a metric is unchanged by a constant rescaling of that metric, and under a rescaling of a metric with constant sectional curvature the sectional curvature is (Constant metric rescaling preserves the connection and Ricci tensor and inversely scales scalar and sectional curvature); in dimension three, is equivalent to constant sectional curvature (Constant-curvature three-manifolds: equivalence of constant sectional curvature, the tensor identity and the Ricci condition, The constant-curvature spatial model of a homogeneous cosmology).
Proof
(Smoothness and Lorentzian signature.) In a product chart with the components of are the smooth functions displayed in FLRW model data: warped product metric, cosmic time, comoving congruence, scale factor and Hubble parameter: , , . Product charts cover and their transition maps are products of the transition maps of and , so by the transformation law [L1] the family is a smooth symmetric -tensor field on . At a point, the matrix of in the coordinate basis is block diagonal, . The block has the single negative entry , and the block is a positive multiple of the positive-definite matrix of ; hence the diagonal entries of a diagonalization are one negative and three positive numbers, and is nondegenerate with inertia . By [L2] this makes a Lorentz form at every point; by Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model the smooth field with these pointwise Lorentz forms is a Lorentzian metric of signature on . Since at every point, [L3] makes a time orientation and a time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold.
(The comoving congruence and the comoving curves.) By step 1.1 the manifold is time-oriented smooth Lorentzian, so the causal vocabulary of [L3] applies. The field is a smooth vector field; its metric pairing is , and . Hence is a future-directed unit timelike vector field, i.e. a smooth future-directed unit timelike congruence. For fixed the smooth curve , has tangent ; its image is and its velocity satisfies and , so it is a future timelike worldline. For , the curve on has derivative , so it is the integral curve of through that point by [L5]. Any extension would still satisfy and constant spatial coordinates, hence would leave beyond this interval; its domain is therefore maximal. The curve is the cosmic-time reparametrization of this same observer trajectory, with velocity .
(Cosmic time is proper time.) For the comoving curve of step 2.1, the proper-time density of [L4] is , a constant. Hence for in , the proper-time increment is by [L4]; in particular the parameter is proper time along up to the choice of zero. The physical four-velocity, defined as the derivative of the worldline with respect to this proper time (Proper time is well defined and reparametrization invariant; the four-velocity is its proper-time tangent), is therefore , with .
(Slices, orthogonality and the scaled spatial curvature.) Fix . The map , , is a smooth embedding onto the embedded submanifold . In a product chart the differential of sends to , so the pullback components are : a smooth, symmetric, positive definite field, hence a Riemannian metric by [L6]. Moreover for because and has no spatial component: the congruence is orthogonal to every slice. Finally, by [L7] the constant rescaling gives , so satisfies the Ricci form with parameter ; the equivalence [L7] turns this into constant sectional curvature .
(Conclusion.) Steps 1.1 and 2.1 establish clauses (a) and (b), step 3.1 establishes the proper-time and four-velocity statements of (b), and step 3.2 establishes clause (c). The proofs used only the displayed component functions, the pointwise algebra of symmetric bilinear forms and the cited general facts; no field equation and no choice beyond the inherited of the suppliers was used.
Remarks
-
What is not asserted. The lemma asserts neither completeness of the comoving observers beyond their computed domains (the maximal -integral parameter domain is ; their cosmic/proper-time domain is ), nor any global product structure of the spacetime beyond the product structure that defines the datum, nor any relation between the time parameter and a physical clock; the physical clock reading is supplied by the framework's clock postulate, not by this lemma.

Sign of the curvature reading. The slice curvature is a real number whose sign is the sign of . The Ricci form displayed in the final proof step uses the equivalence of Constant-curvature three-manifolds: equivalence of constant sectional curvature, the tensor identity and the Ricci condition for the real parameter , which is not restricted to the three signs .
