How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Connected Gibbs jump generators satisfy detailed balance
Statement
Let , let , let be finite energies in joules, and let have units joule. Define
For each , let be a rate in seconds satisfying Gibbs detailed balance , and assume the undirected graph with edge whenever is connected. On , fix an orthonormal energy basis , set , and define for . Fix in joule-seconds. For real functions , define , and define the row-generator action on column observables by . Let
Use the finite GKSL generator with Hamiltonian and the jump matrices . Its observable dissipator is self-adjoint for the -GNS inner product of Specified finite GNS detailed balance, commutes with , and . On diagonal observables, is self-adjoint on with constants as its kernel; for its restriction to has a positive spectral gap . Thus the generator satisfies the specified finite GNS detailed-balance convention and the generic gap conclusion of Faithful scalar-kernel detailed balance gives a relaxation gap applies. This claim does not assert a microscopic bath limit.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: , the energy basis, , , and rates satisfying the finite connected Gibbs detailed-balance hypotheses above.
Specified finite GNS detailed balance: the observable dissipator is ; GNS detailed balance means is self-adjoint for and the Hamiltonian commutes with .
Finite GKSL generates CPTP semigroups: the finite GKSL generator determined by and the finite family generates CPTP maps.
Faithful scalar-kernel detailed balance gives a relaxation gap: if a faithful finite GNS detailed-balance model has , then has a strictly positive gap and its semigroup has the stated exponential relaxation and correlation bounds.
Finite matrix spectral and state calculus: finite Hermitian matrices have an orthonormal eigenbasis and the weighted state form is an inner product when the density is faithful.
Finite matrix trace cyclicity and nondegeneracy: finite traces are cyclic.
Proof
The finite sum is strictly positive, so each and . Hence , , and . The finite GKSL semigroup exists by [F2].
Put . For a diagonal density , , while the anticommutator contributes . Summing entries gives the Schrödinger population equation
For a diagonal observable , direct multiplication gives
so its diagonal action is exactly . For , every gain term vanishes; the anticommutator contributes , and the Hamiltonian commutator contributes . Thus the coherence equation is
For and sums over , the cross terms satisfy after swapping , so . Symmetrizing the quadratic form gives
so is self-adjoint on the diagonal subspace.
For , direct multiplication with diagonal gives unless , and . Also each jump gain is zero when , and the anticommutator with gives . Diagonal and off-diagonal subspaces are orthogonal. Together with the diagonal self-adjointness from step 1.2, these real eigenvalues prove that is self-adjoint on all of .
Connectivity and imply for each , so every off-diagonal matrix unit has a strictly negative -eigenvalue. The Dirichlet identity in step 1.2 vanishes only when along every positive-rate edge; connectedness then forces to be constant. Therefore the diagonal kernel is , the off-diagonal kernel is zero, and . Applying the finite spectral theorem [F4] to the self-adjoint shows its finite list of eigenvalues is strictly negative; their minimum absolute value is .
Steps 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, and 3.1 verify every hypothesis of Specified finite GNS detailed balance and [F3]. Applying [F3] yields the positive gap, exponential relaxation, trace-norm bound, and absolutely integrable centered correlations for this Gibbs jump generator.
Remarks
This is a finite mathematical rate model. Gibbs detailed balance specifies a stationary state and a symmetric generator; it does not derive the rates from a microscopic reservoir or establish that a physical system realizes this model.
