How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Annular state expansion for the Kauffman bracket skein module
Statement
Assume the Axiom of Choice. Let be a planar annulus and identify the solid torus with . Let , , and let be a formal polynomial variable. For a regular annular diagram , a state smooths every crossing. Let and count its A- and B-smoothings, let count the resulting circles that bound disks in , and let count the resulting circles that do not bound disks in ; call a circle that does not bound a disk essential. If is the total full-twist correction from the blackboard framing to the specified framing, counting an A-type twist positively and its inverse negatively as in the framed diagram calculus, set
This value is independent of the regular annular diagram and twist correction of the framed link and induces an -linear map
For the empty link, the empty diagram has its unique empty state and the formula gives .
The diagram below shows one essential core curve and one contractible circle in an annular state; every smoothed component is classified by these two types.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: The Axiom of Choice, a framed link in the solid torus , and a regular annular diagram with its full-twist correction.
The Axiom of Choice, written (The Axiom of Choice).
Countable choice, written , means every countable family of nonempty sets has a choice function (The Axiom of Countable Choice ()).
In ZF, implies (AC implies DC implies countable choice).
At a crossing, the Kauffman bracket state sum uses the A-smoothing with weight , the B-smoothing with weight , and the loop value (Kauffman bracket smoothing and loop value).
The module is generated by framed-link classes modulo the crossing and trivial-circle relations (Kauffman bracket skein module of a three-manifold).
Every framed link in the solid-torus product admits a regular annular diagram with signed full-twist correction marks, and framed isotopies of links are represented by annular planar isotopies and finitely many R1, R2, and R3 moves; R1 changes the blackboard twist correction by the opposite unit (Framed link diagrams and local Reidemeister moves in plane products).
In the fixed source-chart convention, the crossing operators cancel under R2 and satisfy the three-strand braid relation under R3; these are equalities of local Temperley–Lieb tangles (Kauffman bracket R2 and R3 identities).
For two disjoint smoothly embedded circles in , the complement consists of two open disks and a unique open annulus bounded by the circles (Two disjoint circles in the two-sphere cobound an annulus).
Proof
Let and be the inner and outer boundary circles of the planar annulus. For any embedded state circle , apply [F5] to and . Their complement has a disk component on the side, a disk component on the side, and an annulus component. Since lies outside the disk bounded by , it lies either in the annulus component or in the disk component on the side. In the first case the disk component on the side lies inside the disk bounded by and outside the disk bounded by , so bounds a disk in . In the second case separates from , and the annulus component between and lies inside the disk bounded by and outside the disk bounded by . The two disk sides of then contain and , respectively, so neither is contained in ; hence is essential exactly in this second case. Thus an essential has and on opposite disk sides. For two disjoint essential state circles, apply [F5] to the pair. Each disk side containing contains the disk bounded by , while lies on the opposite side of both; therefore the curves are nested and the complementary annulus between them lies outside the disk bounded by and inside the disk bounded by , hence in . Ordering the finitely many essential circles by disk inclusion shows every consecutive pair bounds such an annular band, so they are parallel. Thus and are unambiguous finite counts, and each state contributes a Laurent-polynomial multiple of .
The state set is finite. At a chosen crossing, partition it into states using the A-smoothing and states using the B-smoothing. In a framed skein triple the exterior annular strips agree; place the same twist marks on those common arcs and none on the blackboard-framed local crossing or smoothings. Their total correction is common to all three, so the partition gives . Adding a zero-framed trivial circle increases by one in every state, so it multiplies by . Hence the state expansion annihilates both relation generators in [F2].
Annular planar isotopy preserves which state circles bound disks. Under R2 and R3, the local tangle identities in [F4] remain equal after attaching the same exterior annular tangle; evaluating each resulting contractible loop by and each essential circle by is an -linear operation, so the state expansions agree. For an A-type R1 kink the local state factor is ; for the opposite B-type kink it is . By [F3] the correction decreases by one for the A-type kink and increases by one for the B-type kink, so the factor cancels the raw state-sum change. The value is therefore independent of diagram and framing correction.
By [F3], every framed-link generator has a regular annular diagram and framing correction. Steps 2.1 and 3.1 show that the state expansion is independent of that choice and vanishes on both generators of the defining submodule [F2]. Its -linear extension therefore factors through the quotient and gives the stated map .
