How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Finite square well: bound-state conditions, simplicity and count
The line model of the pair with the declared finite square well potential of depth U and half-width a: self-adjointness and boundedness below of the assigned energy operator, the exact root conditions for its negative eigenvalues, the absence of eigenvalues outside the interval (-U,0), the simplicity and parity of the bound states, the bound-state count, and the stationary-state reading of the eigenpairs. The statement is conditional on P1, P2, P4, P5, the declared potential data and the cited mathematics; it asserts no measured spectrum, no material well and no empirical result.
Statement
Adopt the postulates P1, P2, P4, P5 and the declared line model The declared one-dimensional line model: state space, Hamiltonian, bound states and generalized stationary solutions with mass parameter and spin label , and assume the Axiom of Countable Choice and the Axiom of Choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice (), The Axiom of Choice). Fix , and let with arbitrary real endpoint values and , so that is a total bounded measurable function. It is read in joules, with in joules and in metres; let be the assigned energy operator of the line model with this potential, so that by The one-dimensional free Schr"odinger operator as the weak second-derivative operator and ; finally put . Then:
(a) is an assigned sharp observable; is self-adjoint on and bounded below.
(b) Bound-state conditions. For with write , and , so that . Then is an eigenvalue of if and only if Every such eigenvalue is simple; its eigenfunction is, up to a nonzero scalar, on continued by outside in the even case, and on continued by outside in the odd case. No and no is an eigenvalue, so every eigenvalue of lies in ; the bound-state energies of the model are exactly these eigenvalues, and each bound state is stationary with energy equal to its eigenvalue.
(c) Count. The number of negative eigenvalues of equals ; more precisely, the equations of (b) have exactly one solution in each interval , , whose left endpoint satisfies , and no solution in elsewhere, and the solutions are alternatively of even type ( even) and odd type ( odd). In particular has at least one bound state for all .
(d) Scope. The statement is conditional on P1, P2, P4, P5, the declared well data and the cited mathematics; the energies are read in joules when is in metres, in joules and in . No material well, impurity or measured spectrum is identified with the model, and no empirical result is asserted.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The postulates P1, P2, P4, P5 and the choice hypotheses; the line model with ; the well data , , ; the assigned energy operator with and .
The mathematical finite-well operator. Let , including , exactly the canonical potential of the cited supplier. For this representative the operator , , is self-adjoint; is an eigenvalue of if and only if, with , , , the pair satisfies or ; every such eigenvalue is simple with the displayed eigenfunctions; there are no eigenvalues and none with ; the number of negative eigenvalues equals , the solutions lie one in each interval whose left endpoint satisfies , there are no solutions elsewhere in , and the types alternate with the parity of (Finite square well: root conditions, simplicity and the bound-state count clauses (a)-(d)). Moreover, agrees almost everywhere with the canonical representative , irrespective of its values at the two endpoints, so . Since is real, bounded and measurable with , the same operator coincides with from the model construction and is bounded below by in the quadratic-form sense, by clause (c) of Real multiplication operators and free plus bounded-potential Schrödinger operators.
Model operator identification. The line model's assigned energy operator with potential has domain and acts as ; the endpoint-independent multiplication identity therefore makes it exactly the operator of [F1] (The one-dimensional free Schr"odinger operator as the weak second-derivative operator clauses (a), (b), The declared one-dimensional line model: state space, Hamiltonian, bound states and generalized stationary solutions clause (c)).
Energy observable and stationary reading. is an assigned sharp observable in the sense of clause (a) of Assigned sharp observables and the outcome law of the framework, with the flow of P4 and the declared position outcome law; a nonzero gives a stationary preparation exactly when is an eigenvector of , and the energy law of a unit eigenvector is the point mass at its eigenvalue (The line model's energy observable, flow and stationary states clauses (a), (c); Assigned energy observable, unitary flow and the two pictures of autonomous evolution).
Units. Energy, potential and Hamiltonian eigenvalues are read in joules, position in metres and in ; the energy unit joule is a declared unit for the spectral coordinate (Dimensions, SI unit conventions and quantity types of the framework clauses (b), (c), (d)4).
Proof
Given: The data and hypotheses of the statement and [F1]-[F4].
[Operator identity] By clause (c) of the line model the assigned energy operator of the well is on ; by [F2] this domain is and for every in it, and by [F1], so this is exactly the operator of [F1]. Therefore as operators with the same domain, and [F1] gives that is self-adjoint and bounded below by in the quadratic-form sense.
[Bound state conditions] Since the operators coincide, the eigenvalue statements of [F1] clause (b) apply verbatim to : for the eigenvalue condition is the even or odd root condition, every such eigenvalue is simple and has the displayed eigenfunction. By [F1] clause (c) there are no eigenvalues or , so the eigenvalue set of is contained in and is given by the root conditions; by clause (d) of the model the bound states are exactly the unit eigenvectors with negative eigenvalue, with binding energy the eigenvalue, and by [F3] each is stationary with that energy. This is (b).
[Count] The count and branch description are those of [F1] clause (d) applied to : exactly negative eigenvalues, one solution in each admissible half-period branch, alternating types, and no other solutions. Since , the ceiling is at least one, giving at least one bound state; this is (c).
[Observable reading and scope] By [F3] the pair is an assigned sharp observable with the energy unit of [F4], and the position reading of a unit eigenvector is its density ; no laboratory identification is made, and the exclusions of (d) repeat clause (f) of the line model. This completes the proof of (a)-(d).
Remarks
- Boundedness below. The quadratic-form bound follows from almost everywhere and , or directly from [F1]. Absence of eigenvalues below alone would not exclude continuous spectrum there. The lower bound is not claimed to be attained by a spectral value.
- What is not asserted. The theorem does not compute the eigenvalues numerically beyond their defining root conditions, does not compare them with data, and does not claim that any material system realizes the square well. The example page of the pair carries exact finite checks of the root conditions and of the count.
