How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Levine–Tristram Hermitian form and signature
Definition
Assume full AC. Let be a smooth oriented knot in the oriented standard -sphere, let be a connected compact smooth oriented embedded surface with oriented boundary , let be the matrix of the Seifert pairing in an ordered integral basis, and let . Define the Levine–Tristram Hermitian matrix by It is Hermitian because is real and . Its signature is the number of positive eigenvalues minus the number of negative eigenvalues, both counted with multiplicity and with zero eigenvalues omitted. When , define to be this signature. At a root of , define to be the arithmetic mean of the two one-sided limits of as approaches an argument of from below and above. The invariance and one-sided-existence lemmas justify treating these values as independent of the chosen surface and basis.

Given: Full AC, a smooth oriented knot, a connected compact oriented spanning surface, an ordered integral basis, and a point on the unit circle other than .
Full AC is the choice-function axiom assumed by the Alexander-module and Seifert-pairing suppliers. The Axiom of Choice

Dependency tree · two levels
17 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
