How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Seifert pairing and matrix of an oriented knot
Definition
Assume the Axiom of Choice. Let be a smooth oriented knot in the standard oriented three-sphere, and let be a connected compact smooth oriented embedded surface with boundary , oriented so that its boundary orientation is the given orientation of . Let be the nonnegative integer determined by . Choose an ordered integral basis of the first singular homology group , represented by integral one-cycles on . Orient the normal line of by requiring to be positively oriented in whenever is a positive tangent basis of . The positive push-off is the cycle carried to a sufficiently small positive normal level in a bicollar of .
For disjoint oriented closed curves , orient a meridian of so that a positive tangent to followed by a positive basis of its normal disk gives the ambient orientation. The linking number is the integer determined by in , using the Alexander-duality identification that sends to . Extend linking additively over integral one-cycles. The Seifert pairing is , and its matrix in the chosen basis is , where . The surface and basis are part of the data; this definition asserts no knot-only matrix invariant.

A genus- surface with one boundary component has and the standard handle normal form.
For one component, Alexander duality normalizes the positive meridian as the generator of .
Full Axiom of Choice used by the Alexander-duality linking convention.
Full choice implies the countable-choice hypothesis of the surface normal-form suppliers.
