How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
An explicit PEC standing wave in the unit cube
Example
Let and let be constant. The field is a nonzero PEC Maxwell eigenfield with eigenvalue . It belongs to the full-kernel quotient gauge, and the spectral approximation theorem places this eigenvalue in a convergent discrete edge-element cluster. No claim is made that this eigenvalue is simple.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: the Axiom of Choice, Countable Choice, Dependent Choice, the unit cube, positive constants , the real PEC curl-curl formulation and its full-kernel quotient gauge, and a shape-regular refining family of matching affine tetrahedral meshes with . Assume the three supplier statements on regular decomposition (Regular decomposition of zero-tangential H(curl) fields), discrete compactness (Discrete compactness and uniform Poincare inequality for Nedelec fields) and uniformly bounded commuting cochain projections (Uniformly bounded commuting projection for lowest-order Nedelec spaces) hold for this exact domain, PEC boundary convention and mesh family.
The eigenrelation is for every in the gauge space. (PEC Maxwell cavity eigenproblem and full-kernel gauge)
Compactly supported smooth vector fields are dense in in the graph norm. This is the zero-tangential space's closure definition. (Zero tangential trace H(curl) space)
The spectral approximation theorem gives full-multiplicity cluster convergence and no positive spectral pollution under its declared suppliers. (Spectral convergence and no nonzero pollution for PEC edge elements)
Countable Choice is inherited through the theorem's compact spectral supplier; the item also retains its explicitly declared AC and DC branches. (The Axiom of Choice, The Axiom of Countable Choice (), The axiom of dependent choice: a relation in which every element is related to something admits an -indexed chain)
The compact coercive solution operator has isolated positive eigenvalues of finite multiplicity. (Discrete spectrum and min–max principle for a compact coercive form)
Verification
Put . On the faces and , , so its tangential component vanishes there; on , is normal. To verify the closure convention in [F2], choose a smooth one-variable cutoff which is zero within distance of , one beyond distance , and has derivative bounded by . Let . Then and . The -derivative term in the cross product is zero because it is parallel to ; on an - or -boundary layer, the corresponding sine factor is and cancels the cutoff derivative. The remaining terms are bounded and supported in a layer of volume , so their norms tend to zero. Also in . Thus .
Direct differentiation gives , , and . For every compactly supported smooth test field , distributional integration by parts yields . By [F2] and continuity of both pairings, the identity extends to all . Hence [F1] holds with . Testing that identity with any gives , so and .
The eigenvalue is positive and the field is nonzero. By [F3], its full continuous eigenspace cluster is approximated with its actual multiplicity; the argument makes no selection of an individual limiting discrete eigenvector.
