How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Nontrivial knot exteriors are irreducible and boundary-incompressible
Statement
Assume the Axiom of Choice. Let be a smooth oriented knot with a chosen product tubular neighbourhood , and set and . If is not ambient isotopic through orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms to the standard unknot, then every smoothly embedded -sphere in bounds an embedded -ball in , and there is no smoothly embedded disk whose interior misses and whose boundary is an essential simple closed curve in .

Facts & Assumptions
Given: Full AC, the smooth oriented knot, its chosen product tube and the non-unknot hypothesis in the original Statement.
Full AC implies countable choice: restrict a choice function to the given countable family. The Axiom of Choice The Axiom of Countable Choice ()
For a chosen smooth knot exterior under countable choice, every interior smooth sphere bounds an actual smooth standard ball contained in that exterior. A smooth knot exterior is irreducible
Under full AC, a nontrivial smooth knot exterior has no smooth boundary-preimage disk with essential boundary on its peripheral torus. Its proof includes boundary-fixed neatification before the disk-to-core annulus seam is rounded, so no unstated transverse-boundary assumption is needed. The boundary of a nontrivial knot exterior is incompressible
Proof
By [A1], the countable-choice hypothesis of [F1] holds. Its chosen tube and exterior are precisely those in the Statement. Apply [F1] to each specified interior sphere to obtain a smooth embedded ball in with that boundary, proving the first conclusion.
The full-AC and nontrivial-knot hypotheses of [F2] are exactly supplied. A disk of the kind excluded in the Statement has its interior in the exterior interior and its boundary on , so it is one of the boundary-preimage smooth disks excluded by [F2]. Apply that result to prove the second conclusion. Neither argument uses atoroidality, a hyperbolic metric or an extra torus-classification premise.

38 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
