How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Contact nodal coordinates are independently attainable

Statement

Under Conforming nodal P1 Signorini contact discretization, let the contact vertices be a0,…,aN and define B:Vh→RN+1 by Bi(vh)=vh(ai)⋅n. Then B is onto. In particular, for each i there is wi∈Vh with Bj(wi)=δij for every contact vertex aj.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The finite matching, boundary-conforming triangular mesh from Conforming nodal P1 Signorini contact discretization, with both disjoint boundary segments resolved by boundary edges.

[A1]

The Axiom of Choice is inherited through the partial-trace space that defines Vh. (The Axiom of Choice, Partial-trace displacement space on a polygon)

[A2]

Countable Choice is assumed by the matching piecewise-polynomial inclusion theorem. (The Axiom of Countable Choice (ACω), Continuous matching piecewise polynomials belong to W1p)

[F1]

Each mesh cell is a finite nondegenerate affine triangle, and two cells meet in a whole common face or not at all. (Matching affine simplicial meshes and shape regularity)

[F2]

Vh consists of continuous piecewise-affine vector fields in V, and both ΓD and ΓC are unions of boundary edges. (Conforming nodal P1 Signorini contact discretization)

[F3]

For an H1 field with a representative extending continuously to the closed collar (in particular, a field in C(Ω‾;R2)), TD agrees with that representative's boundary restriction on ΓD. (Partial-trace displacement space on a polygon, The Lp trace operator on a bounded C1 domain)

[F4]

A scalar function that is polynomial on every cell and has matching traces on all common facets is in the conforming piecewise-polynomial space. (Broken and conforming polynomial spaces on a matching mesh)

[F5]

A continuous scalar member of that conforming piecewise-polynomial space belongs to H1(Ω), with weak gradient equal almost everywhere to its cellwise gradient. (Continuous matching piecewise polynomials belong to W1p)

[F6]

The contact normal n is a unit vector and ΓD∩ΓC=∅. (Partial-trace displacement space on a polygon)

1.1F1givenconstructalgebra

Fix a contact vertex ai. On a nondegenerate triangle K with vertices b0,b1,b2, the matrix with columns b1−b0 and b2−b0 is invertible by [F1]. For x∈K, write (s,t) for its image under the inverse affine coordinate map x=b0+s(b1−b0)+t(b2−b0), and define λ0=1−s−t, λ1=s, λ2=t. These affine functions take the Kronecker values at the three vertices. Define ϕi∣K=λj if ai=bj, and ϕi∣K=0 if ai is not a vertex of K. This finite cellwise construction gives a piecewise-affine scalar function with value 1 at ai and 0 at every other mesh vertex.

On any common facet, the two affine restrictions of ϕi agree at every facet vertex: the value is 1 exactly at ai if that vertex lies on the facet, and is 0 at the other vertices. Affine functions on an edge are determined by their two endpoint values, so the restrictions agree on every common edge; at a shared vertex they both have the same prescribed nodal value. Thus ϕi is globally continuous and belongs to the conforming piecewise-affine space [F4]. By [F5], ϕi∈H1(Ω).

No contact vertex lies on ΓD by [F6]. Since ΓD is a union of boundary edges, ϕi vanishes at both endpoints of each such edge and, being affine on the edge, vanishes on the entire segment. The vector field wi:=ϕin is continuous on Ω‾ and belongs to H1(Ω;R2) because ϕi∈H1(Ω) by step 2.1. Its ordinary boundary restriction vanishes on ΓD, so the vector-valued trace agreement in [F3] gives TDwi=0; hence wi∈Vh by [F2]. At each contact vertex, Bj(wi)=ϕi(aj)(n⋅n)=δij by [F6]. For any y=(y0,…,yN)∈RN+1, the finite sum w=∑iyiwi lies in Vh and satisfies Bj(w)=yj for every j. Hence B is onto.
