How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Explicit charge-one BPST connection on the round four-sphere
Statement
Assume full Axiom of Choice. Let and have the Euclidean induced unit round metric . Put and , and set and . Define the north chart by
and the south chart by
Write and for the inverse chart coordinates, so , , and on the overlap . The north coordinates have . The metrics in these charts are respectively and .
Define . Write and let
The are traceless anti-Hermitian generators. Set . Define antisymmetric symbols by , , , and for spatial indices , where is the Kronecker delta; extend them antisymmetrically in the last two indices. For a scale parameter , define on . Form the quotient of the two trivial right -bundles by identifying for each and , so its local sections satisfy . Take the set of admitted bundle sectors to be the singleton containing the isomorphism class of this glued bundle, and take the representation family to be the singleton defining representation on . Define the local connection potentials by
On the overlap these obey , so they define a smooth principal connection on the glued bundle. Let be its global curvature, with chart representatives and . In the north chart its curvature, written , has components
Let be the Hodge star characterized on two-forms by , acting componentwise on the Lie-algebra coefficients. This curvature is self-dual, meaning . With as fixed above, define the charge by and, for any real , define the action by . Then , , and the action saturates the self-dual bound. This is one explicit Belavin–Polyakov–Schwartz–Tyupkin (BPST) charge-one connection; no uniqueness or moduli classification is asserted.

Proof
The Pauli identity gives . In entries this matrix is , whose determinant is . Thus is unitary with determinant one wherever . The equations and make closed in the eight-dimensional real matrix space, and its entries have modulus at most one, so it is bounded; [F2] gives compactness. The traceless skew-Hermitian matrices have the form for and , so form a real basis. Direct multiplication gives and . For , cyclicity gives , while , so . Since , for ; and by cyclicity for . Thus is symmetric, positive definite, and adjoint-invariant. Finally and lie in , while , so is non-Abelian. Together with [F1], this verifies the group, representation, and trace hypotheses of the definition.
By [F7], the quotient with is a smooth right principal -bundle with sections satisfying . Full AC [A1] supplies the countable-choice hypothesis of the gauge-data interface [F6], which specifies the actual global form, singleton defining-representation family, and bundle sector selected in the Statement. Matrix multiplication using gives and . Thus . With transition , [F3] gives . Substituting and , the term containing vanishes by antisymmetry, leaving exactly the displayed . The coefficients are smooth at because , and is smooth at because its denominator is positive and its numerator is linear in . In a product chart with local section and group coordinate , set . The checked transition relation makes these forms agree on the overlap; direct substitution gives for every fundamental vertical vector and for every fixed . The converse in [F3] therefore gives a smooth principal connection on the glued bundle.
Differentiating and using [F4] gives , where and . Put , write for spatial indices, and set . For , expanding the symbols gives . The contraction makes the terms cancel, and cancels the terms linear in ; hence . For distinct spatial , expansion gives the derivative terms . The terms in the bracket product linear in equal , so they cancel those derivative terms. Contracting the two spatial epsilon factors by leaves , and the two-index- term is . Let be the remaining spatial index and . If , the first two terms of are ; if , they are ; if , all three terms sum to . Thus and . These are all independent antisymmetric index pairs, so . The two-forms , , and are self-dual in the chosen Euclidean orientation because the Euclidean Hodge star interchanges the two displayed summands in each. Write on the north chart, where and . At each point, the induced inner product on two-forms scales by while the oriented volume form scales by . Thus for all two-forms there. The defining wedge identity and nondegeneracy of the wedge pairing imply on two-forms pointwise. Hence .
The trace form gives and the defining symbols satisfy . Since , the local action density is . The radial substitution gives : with , . Hence ; the omitted stereographic point has measure zero and the patched curvature is smooth. Self-duality gives , so . The action is , finite and equal to the bound in [F5]. The definition and bound interfaces invoked in [F5] both assume full AC [A1].
Remarks
The square records the change of local connection form across the overlap and its induced curvature change. Step 2.1 verifies the top arrow, and step 3.1 verifies the curvature calculation; the proof does not rely on the diagram.
