How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Blowups of integral projective complex schemes are projective
Statement
Assume the Axiom of Choice. Let be an integral projective complex scheme of finite type, with structure morphism (Projective morphisms before Proj), and let be a nonzero finite-type quasi-coherent ideal sheaf (Quasi-coherent ideal sheaves). Then the blowup of Blowup of a scheme along an ideal sheaf is projective over : for some its structure morphism factors as a closed immersion followed by the projection. Consequently every composition of blowups of an integral projective complex scheme along nonzero finite-type ideal sheaves remains integral and projective over .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The Axiom of Choice, an integral finite-type projective complex scheme , and a nonzero finite-type quasi-coherent ideal sheaf .
Blowing up the base ideal resolves a rational map to projective space and Invariance of the blowup under invertible (fractional) rescaling of the ideal: for an integral finite-type -scheme , an invertible sheaf and meromorphic sections of , not all zero, with generated subsheaf , the fractional blowup is integral and is the schematic closure of the graph of the induced rational map, hence a closed immersion; here is a fractional ideal in the sense of Invariance of the blowup under invertible (fractional) rescaling of the ideal.
Coherent sheaves on a locally Noetherian scheme and Eventual generation of coherent projective twists: on a locally Noetherian scheme a quasi-coherent module is coherent exactly when it is of finite type, so is coherent on ; and on a scheme projective over the Noetherian ring with an ample invertible sheaf , every coherent module has globally generated for all sufficiently large .
The twisting sheaf of projective space is very ample and ample, Relative very ampleness in the finite projective-space convention, Relative projective space from standard charts and Absolute ampleness by affine section opens: the twisting sheaf is invertible with coordinate sections whose nonvanishing loci are exactly the standard affine charts , and it is ample on ; absolute ampleness means quasi-compactness of the scheme together with an affinity test by nonvanishing loci of sections of positive powers.
Base change of immersions, Closed immersions are affine quotients and survive base change and Closed immersions of schemes: closed immersions are affine and Zariski-local on the target — over an affine open a closed immersion is — they are stable under arbitrary base change, and a composite of closed immersions is again a closed immersion.
The Segre-Veronese map is a closed embedding: the bidegree- Segre map is a closed embedding.
Integrality and reducedness of blowups from the Rees charts and Integral schemes: blowing up an integral scheme in a nonzero finite-type quasi-coherent ideal sheaf yields an integral scheme.
The Axiom of Choice: the Axiom of Choice is the standing hypothesis, inherited here from the relative Proj construction and from the eventual global generation furnished by Serre's criterion.
Proof
carries the closed immersion given by its projectivity, and is invertible. The standard charts are affine and cover , so the finitely many intersections , where , are affine: each is a closed subscheme of the affine chart , hence for a quotient of the polynomial ring over [lem-closed-immersion-affine-quotient-and-base-change]. Every is Noetherian [lem-field-is-noetherian, cor-finite-variable-polynomial-ring-noetherian, thm-noetherian-ring-quotients-and-localisations], so this finite affine cover exhibits the scheme as locally Noetherian and quasi-compact [def-locally-noetherian-and-noetherian-scheme, def-quasi-compact-and-quasi-separated-scheme]. The coordinate section has nonvanishing locus and pullback along a closed immersion of an invertible sheaf has as nonvanishing locus the preimage of the original one [def-very-ample-invertible-sheaf-relative, def-closed-immersion-schemes], so the charts are affine and cover ; the ampleness criterion of [def-ample-invertible-sheaf] therefore makes ample on .
By [F2] the quasi-coherent finite-type ideal sheaf is coherent on the locally Noetherian , and since is projective over the Noetherian ring and is ample there is such that is globally generated for every . Fix , put and , and choose finitely many global sections generating . To justify finiteness, global generation supplies finitely many such sections generating each finite-type stalk; their coherent cokernel vanishes on a neighbourhood of that point (on an affine chart, each of its finitely many generators is killed after localizing away from that point). Quasi-compactness of supplies finitely many of these neighbourhoods, and the union of their finite section tuples generates everywhere. Since and is invertible, , so not all are zero and as subsheaves of .
Apply [F1] to the integral finite-type -scheme , the invertible sheaf and the meromorphic sections : the fractional blowup is integral and is the schematic closure of the graph of the induced rational map, hence a closed immersion.
The canonical isomorphisms of -modules [def-invertible-sheaf] identify the graded -algebras and , hence induce an -isomorphism [def-blowup-scheme-along-ideal, def-blowup-fractional-ideal]. Composing with the closed immersion of step 3.1, the blowup is a closed subscheme of over .
Base change of the closed immersion along is a closed immersion [F4], and the Segre embedding of [F5] is a closed immersion with . A composite of closed immersions is again a closed immersion [F4], so is a closed subscheme of ; all exhibited maps are morphisms over , so the structure morphism factors as this closed immersion followed by the projection, and is projective over in the sense of [def-projective-morphism-pre-proj].
For the composition clause argue by induction on the number of factors: let be integral projective over and for nonzero finite-type quasi-coherent ideal sheaves . If is integral projective then steps 1.1-5.1 applied to show that is projective over , and [F6] shows that it stays integral, so the induction runs through every finite composition.
Boundaries and Choice accounting. An integral scheme is nonempty and by hypothesis, so the empty and zero cases are excluded; the chosen twist satisfies ; the endpoint of a single generator is allowed, the Segre factor then being with ; and is covered by the same argument with the single chart . The Axiom of Choice [F7] is inherited exactly from [F1] and [F2]; no further selection is made.
Remarks
The new item is the projectivity input used by the smooth-projective hyperresolution theorem on the same page. The proof passes through the graph-closure corollary rather than through a relative-ample Rees sheaf: the invariance of Rees Proj under an invertible twist for an invertible lets the eventually globally generated twist produce an actual closed immersion into a product of projective spaces.
