How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Known-variance Normal-Normal conjugate update

Statement

Assume AC. Let μ∼N(μ0,τ02) with τ02>0, and, conditional on μ, let Y1,…,Yn be IID N(μ,σ2) with known σ2>0 and n≥1. The sampling data use the Borel sigma-algebra on Rn with n-dimensional Lebesgue measure. For every y1:n∈Rn, define Vn=(τ0−2+nσ−2)−1,μn=Vn(μ0τ02+nyˉσ2),yˉ=1n∑i=1nyi. The evidence is finite and positive, and the posterior is N(μn,Vn).

Facts & Assumptions

[A1]

The Axiom of Choice is assumed by the Gaussian density normalization supplier. The Axiom of Choice.

[A2]

The Axiom of Choice implies Countable Choice. AC supplies countable selections and prescribed serial paths.

[F1]

For m∈R and scale s>0, N(m,s2) has density (2πs2)−1/2exp⁡(−(x−m)2/(2s2)). A positive-variance normal law has its location-scale density.

[F2]

This normal density integrates to one under AC. The standard normal density has total mass one.

A proper prior probability and parameter-measurable sampling probability kernel constitute a Bayesian model. Bayesian model as a prior and sampling kernel.

[F4]

Evidence is the prior integral of the joint likelihood section; the normalized quotient is introduced only on finite positive evidence. Evidence normalizer and fiberwise posterior update.

[F5]

The likelihood-weighted prior can be normalized to a probability exactly when evidence is finite and positive. Fiberwise posterior propriety is equivalent to finite positive evidence.

[F6]

The dominated Bayes formula identifies the normalized density quotient as a posterior kernel. Bayes formula for dominated kernels.

[F7]

A probability kernel has probability-measure sections and measurable event evaluations. Measure kernel and probability kernel.

[F9]

A nonnegative measurable density defines a measure; Tonelli factors its nonnegative integral on sigma-finite product spaces. The indefinite integral of a nonnegative measurable function is a measure Tonelli's theorem for nonnegative measurable functions on a sigma-finite product.

[F10]

Under Countable Choice, λn is sigma-finite and agrees on Borel sets with the product of n one-dimensional Lebesgue measures. Lebesgue measure is sigma-finite, and every metrically bounded subset of Rn has finite outer measure On Borel subsets of R^{m+n}, the product lambda_m times lambda_n agrees with lambda_{m+n}.

[F11]

Independent random elements have their product law, and probability measures agreeing on a generating pi-system with a finite exhaustion agree everywhere. Independent random elements have product joint law Measures agreeing on a generating pi-system are equal under an increasing finite-measure exhaustion from that pi-system.

[F12]

Product-coordinate maps are measurable on Euclidean Borel products, and integration of a nonnegative product-measurable function against a constant uniformly sigma-finite measure kernel is measurable in its parameter. The product sigma-algebra and its finite iterates The Borel product of R^m and R^n is the Borel sigma-algebra of R^{m+n} Measurability of integration against a kernel.

Let ℓ(μ,y1:n)=∏i=1n(2πσ2)−1/2exp⁡(−(yi−μ)2/(2σ2)). The coordinate maps on the parameter-data product are measurable by [F12], so [F8] makes ℓ product-measurable. For each fixed μ, [F10] and Tonelli [F9] show that ℓ(μ,⋅) integrates to one. On every product rectangle, the density measure ℓ(μ,⋅) dλn has the product of the N(μ,σ2) marginal probabilities by [F9] and [F10]; conditional independence gives the same rectangle values, so [F11] identifies it with the conditional sample law. Define K(μ,D)=∫Dℓ(μ,y) dλn(y) for Borel D. By [F9] each section is a probability measure. The constant λn kernel has the finite exhaustion (−j,j]n by [F10]; since ℓ(μ,y)1D(y) is product-measurable, [F12] makes μ↦K(μ,D) measurable. Thus [F7] makes K a probability kernel, and with the proper normal prior it gives the Bayesian model in [F3]. Now put P=τ0−2+nσ−2>0, q=μ0τ0−2+σ−2∑iyi, and r=μ02τ0−2+σ−2∑iyi2. By [F1] at positive scales τ02 and σ2, whose existence is [F13], the product of the prior and sample densities is Cexp⁡{−12(Pμ2−2qμ+r)},C=(2πτ02)−1/2(2πσ2)−n/2>0.

Completing the square gives Pμ2−2qμ+r=P(μ−q/P)2+Δ, where Δ=r−q2/P≥0 because the left side is a sum of nonnegative weighted squares and at μ=q/P equals Δ. Hence the evidence is Ce−Δ/22π/P. It is finite and strictly positive; the Gaussian integral follows by scaling the normalized density in [F1]–[F2] at scale 1/P, which exists by [F13].

3.1A1F1F2F4F5F6F13step 2.1algebra∎

Dividing the likelihood times prior in step 1.1 by the evidence computed in the preceding step gives the density P/(2π)exp⁡{−P(μ−q/P)2/2}, which is N(q/P,1/P) by [F1] at scale 1/P from [F13]. Since 1/P=Vn and q/P=μn, this is the stated posterior. Finite-positive evidence is the valid domain by [F4] and [F5], and [F6] supplies the posterior-kernel identity; [F2] normalizes the resulting Gaussian density.
