How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Reduction of the heavy symmetric top branch: pivotal angular momentum, Euler-angle equations, the two conserved momenta and the one-dimensional equation
Conditional deductions inside the heavy symmetric top branch of Adoption of the heavy symmetric top branch: axisymmetric rigid material, a fixed pivot material point, a uniform gravitational field and the balance of angular momentum about the pivot for the rigid-material model of Adoption of the rigid-material model branch: reference mass distribution, rigid placements, orientation and scope: the angular momentum about the pivot equals with the inertia about the pivot; the pivot balance gives the body-frame equations; and on any interval on which the orientation is described by the Euler-angle chart with the motion satisfies the heavy-top system with parameters equal to the pivot transverse moment , the axial moment , the total mass , the pivot distance and the field strength , so the conserved momenta, the reduced energy and the one-dimensional equation hold. The statement carries the countable-choice assumption used only for the finiteness of the defining integrals, assumes the chart description as an explicit hypothesis, asserts nothing at the chart's poles, excludes friction and driving torques at the pivot, and asserts no measured value.
Statement
Assume the Axiom of Countable Choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice ()), used only for the finiteness of the defining integrals of the model's inertial quantities. Adopt the heavy symmetric top branch Adoption of the heavy symmetric top branch: axisymmetric rigid material, a fixed pivot material point, a uniform gravitational field and the balance of angular momentum about the pivot with parameters , , , and total mass ; use the notation of that postulate: the pivot material point is held at the origin, so ; the pivot reaction contributes no torque about the origin; and the external gravitational field is with total torque about the origin . Put the transverse moment of the model about the pivot and its axial moment. Let be a motion of the branch with time window , and suppose that there are functions of class with and the Euler-angle description of The Euler-angle parametrization and the heavy symmetric top system. Then:
- Angular momentum about the pivot. With the body angular velocity of the motion and (the diagonal matrix in the principal basis) one has and the balance of Adoption of the heavy symmetric top branch: axisymmetric rigid material, a fixed pivot material point, a uniform gravitational field and the balance of angular momentum about the pivot clause (v) reads with
- Body-frame pivot equations. With , that is, componentwise in the principal basis, Under the Euler-angle description of the statement,
- Reduction to one dimension. Define on Then and are constant on ; consequently the reduced energy is constant on ; and with the effective potential one has on .
- The heavy-top system. Equivalently, is a heavy-top trajectory of The Euler-angle parametrization and the heavy symmetric top system with parameters , and clauses 1-4 of Reduction of the heavy symmetric top system: conserved momenta, one-dimensional equation and conserved reduced energy hold for it.
The statement assumes the Euler-angle description as a hypothesis on the interval: no claim is made that every motion of the branch admits such a description, that a description extends across the poles (where the sleeping-top and hanging configurations lie), or that the description is unique. On every subinterval on which a description with exists, the conclusions hold there. The statement asserts no friction or driving torque at the pivot, no measurement and no empirical value.

Proof
By [L1] the constraint gives , and since is with by [L6] one has .
By [L4], reading the columns of the three factors and using , the vector equals , and .
By [L1] the gravitational force system of the branch acts as the total force applied at the centre of mass, whose torque about the origin is ; with from step 1.1 this is , and because the cross product is orthogonal to its factors by [L6].
By [L2] one has . Substituting and from step 1.1 and using , , from [L3] gives by [L6] and the vector triple product with , so with and , . Hence the balance of [L1] reads with as in step 2.1, completing clause 1.
Since is and is , the product is and from step 3.1 gives by [L6]; with the balance of step 3.1 and one gets . By step 2.1 and [L6], with of step 1.2, so . Componentwise, , , and , , , giving the three displayed equations of clause 2.
The third of the equations of step 4.1 gives , and , so is constant on the interval by [L6]; by step 1.2, is constant on .
By step 3.1 and [L6], by step 2.1, so is constant on ; and by steps 3.1 and 1.2, . Substituting the components of [L4] and step 1.2 and using from [L4] gives and , so is constant on .
Put , so that has and, by [L4] and , the identity holds. Differentiating with [L6] gives , where ; using the first two equations of step 4.1, the components of [L4] and the values , and of step 1.2, one computes and , hence , the last equality by from step 1.2 and from step 5.1.
The three equations of the definition of [L5] hold: the first is by step 6.1, the third is by step 5.1, and the second is by step 6.2 with . Therefore is a heavy-top trajectory of [L5] with parameters , and clauses 1-4 of Reduction of the heavy symmetric top system: conserved momenta, one-dimensional equation and conserved reduced energy apply: and are constant, and are given by the displayed formulas, the reduced energy is constant, and . This proves clauses 3 and 4.
Remarks
-
Where comes from. The transverse moment of the model about the pivot is the transverse moment about the centre of mass shifted by ; this is why the reduction uses and the supplier's parameter is identified with the pivot moment, not with . The axial moment is unchanged because the shift is along the symmetry axis.
-
The role of the chart. The Euler-angle description is a hypothesis; the chart is singular at the poles , where the sleeping top and the hanging configuration lie, and the statement says nothing there. The definitions of , , and depend on the chosen description (the angles are determined only up to the chart's ambiguities), while the physical conclusions of clause 3 are invariants of the motion.
-
No empirical content. Clause 3 is a conditional deduction from the adopted branch; in particular the sleeping-top threshold, the stability of the upright top and the interpretation of precession in any concrete apparatus are not asserted here, and no value of , , , or is measured.
