How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Uniform Coulomb dipole expansion of a compactly supported charge density with an explicit remainder
The exterior potential of a compactly supported charge density in classical electrostatics: for the localised Newtonian potential equals the monopole term plus the dipole term plus an explicit remainder bounded by , uniformly in the exterior region. Only the potential is expanded; no derivative estimate of the remainder, no field expansion and no value on or inside the support are claimed.
Statement
Assume the Axiom of Countable Choice (), inherited from the cited Lebesgue and Newtonian interfaces (The Axiom of Countable Choice ()). Let , let be real and vanish -a.e. outside the closed ball (Open ball, closed ball and sphere in a metric space, Measure-null sets and almost-everywhere statements relative to a measure), let and be the total charge and dipole moment of about the chart origin (Total charge, dipole moment, Cartesian moments and traceless quadrupole of a static charge distribution (a)), let , and let , where is the Newtonian potential of Newtonian potential of compactly supported data and is the constant of Framework-local SI units, the vacuum constants and the exact/measured status of their values. Then:
(a) [Uniform monopole-dipole expansion] for every with the integral is absolutely convergent and equals , and
the bound being uniform over the whole exterior region ;
(b) [Leading-term form] consequently, for ,
and if and , then for every unit direction , , with and every the dipole term is the leading term in the sense that with , so and the remainder bound decays one power of faster than the dipole term;
(c) [Physical reading] by The localized Newtonian potential and the ideal point-charge Coulomb field (c) the function is finite -a.e., locally integrable, of class and harmonic off , and satisfies in ; the displayed expansion is therefore the exterior expansion of the potential of the compactly supported source in the fixed-time reading of The static and pure electrostatic regimes and their fixed-time reading (e), and in the smooth branch (The localized Newtonian potential and the ideal point-charge Coulomb field (a)) the field of The electric and magnetic fields as fixed-time spatial vector fields realises the pure electrostatic regime of The static and pure electrostatic regimes and their fixed-time reading (c) with source ;
(d) [Scope and exclusions] the hypotheses are a real compactly supported density, the region , and the framework's constants; need not be continuous or bounded; the statement concerns itself, and no derivative estimate for , no expansion of the field , and no assertion on or on the support of is claimed.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: Assume ; let , let be real and vanish -a.e. outside , and put with as in Framework-local SI units, the vacuum constants and the exact/measured status of their values.
For a measurable compactly supported , the Newtonian potential is at each where the integral is absolutely finite (Newtonian potential of compactly supported data).
With the positive-minus-Laplacian normalisation in dimension three, the fundamental solution is away from the pole (The localized Newtonian potential and the ideal point-charge Coulomb field).
If is real and compactly supported, then is finite -a.e., belongs to , is and harmonic off the support of , and in ; if in addition is with compact support in , then satisfies , and for (The localized Newtonian potential and the ideal point-charge Coulomb field).
The framework's electric constant is with measured and ; the potential carries the volt (Framework-local SI units, the vacuum constants and the exact/measured status of their values).
For vanishing -a.e. outside , the total charge and dipole moment about the chart origin are absolutely convergent (Total charge, dipole moment, Cartesian moments and traceless quadrupole of a static charge distribution).
If vanishes -a.e. outside and , then with (Monopole-dipole expansion with an explicit remainder for compactly supported densities).
If and , then (The Lebesgue integral is linear on ).
for the Euclidean inner product, and for the Euclidean norm (Cauchy-Schwarz with its equality case, the triangle inequality for , the parallelogram law and polarisation).
; and if is a norm on a real vector space , then for all (Open ball, closed ball and sphere in a metric space, The finite and reverse triangle inequalities for a norm; and for every norm on satisfies and is Lipschitz, hence continuous, for ).
If agree -a.e., their Lebesgue integrals agree, and (Two integrable functions are equal almost everywhere exactly when all of their indefinite integrals agree, The modulus of an integral is bounded by the integral of the modulus).
In the static regime with and the smooth Maxwell equations reduce to , , and the fixed-time dictionary identifies the spatial equations with the four-dimensional weak reading (The static and pure electrostatic regimes and their fixed-time reading).
Proof
Fix with and establish the absolute convergence and the Coulomb identification. For -a.e. , either or ; in the latter case by [F9], so by the reverse triangle inequality for the Euclidean norm [F9] and [F8], and hence ; the integrand is therefore dominated -a.e. by , which gives absolute convergence by [F10]. Since vanishes a.e. off and the kernel is continuous on that ball, replacing by its a.e.-equal representative that is zero off does not change the integral [F10], and the defining formula of the Newtonian potential together with for gives for every admissible [F1, F2].
Apply the monopole-dipole remainder lemma and scale to obtain (a). By [F6] with the same and the same a.e.-support hypothesis, with for , where and are the moments of [F5]; multiplying the identity by the constant , which factors out of the integral by [F7] and is finite and positive by [F4], gives with and the displayed uniform bound.
Prove the leading-term estimate (b). By Cauchy-Schwarz and [F8], , so , and the triangle inequality [F10] applied to step 2.1 gives the displayed bound. If and , fix with and and ; then the dipole term equals and the remainder obeys , so writing gives and with .
Read the physical content (c). By [F3], applied to the representative that vanishes off , the function is finite -a.e., locally integrable, and harmonic off the support of that representative, hence off , and in ; these properties are unchanged by the a.e. choice of representative [F10], and is related to exactly as in the fixed-time dictionary of [F11]. In the smooth case of [F3], is on with , and satisfies and , which is the pure electrostatic regime of [F11] with source .
Record the scope (d) and complete the proof. The hypotheses used were exactly the real density vanishing -a.e. off , the exterior region and the framework's constants [F4]; no continuity or boundedness of was assumed, the argument differentiates no remainder and expands no field, and no assertion inside or on the support of was made, so the exclusions of (d) are respected.
