How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Baldwin–Sivek instanton-surgery and Newton-polygon input module
Statement
Assume full AC and let be a knot. The input package required by the Baldwin–Sivek thin-knot and infinitely-many-abelian-surgeries arguments consists of the following conclusions with their stated hypotheses: (i) a nontrivial -averse knot has a unique rational accumulation slope and either it or its mirror is an instanton L-space knot; (ii) a nontrivial instanton L-space knot is fibered and its symmetrized Alexander polynomial has coefficients in with nonzero coefficients alternating in sign; (iii) the L-space satellite restrictions and the pattern/companion surgery-transfer statements exclude the satellite cases used in §§3–5; and (iv) the hyperbolic Dehn-filling theorem and the knot-exterior JSJ classification reduce the remaining cases to torus knots. This carrier records the exact imported result interfaces and does not assert that these conclusions have been proved locally.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: Full AC and the full original input-package scope. The finite representation/pillowcase argument below is retained. Its gauge-theoretic premises are explicit external inputs, not locally reconstructed instanton proofs.
Filling with primitive slope imposes the actual group relation . Abelianization of a knot group is generated by its meridian. A unitary reducible two-dimensional representation is simultaneously diagonal: the orthogonal complement of its invariant line is invariant as well. Consequently its image is abelian, and a representation with abelian image factors through the cyclic abelianization of the filled group. Thus SU2-abelian and SU2-cyclic are equivalent here, including the zero-slope case. SL2(C)-abelian surgery Homology and preferred longitude of a knot exterior
The actual finite representation and common-eigenline incidence varieties have finitely many irreducible components. For each component, dimension of its affine image is the transcendence degree of its coordinate function field. The generic adjoint trace pairing, cap identity, pair exact sequence and word derivations apply over the actual finitely generated characteristic-zero field. The SL2 representation variety is affine A classical affine algebraic set has a unique finite irredundant decomposition Affine-domain dimension equals transcendence degree The generic adjoint peripheral kernel is the logarithmic conormal line
The ordinary A-polynomial is a nonzero square-free Laurent equation for the one-dimensional peripheral eigenvalue-image components, including the abelian component. It omits isolated image components but not points on a curve component. The ordinary knot A-polynomial
The actual marked pattern/companion filling transfers, including reducible nonabelian SL2 cases, and the closed hyperbolic holonomy lift are already supplied. They do not establish the instanton alternative [L1], L-space surgery, or Alexander coefficient restrictions. SL2-abelian satellite fillings transfer to the pattern and companion Closed oriented hyperbolic holonomy has a faithful SL2 lift
External input: Sivek–Zentner, SU(2)-cyclic surgeries and the pillowcase, arXiv:1710.01957v2, Theorem 4.1 (statement on pp.3–4 and in §4), proves for EVERY nontrivial knot the following alternative: either the entire vertical circle is realized by irreducible SU2 representations, or there is an arc of irreducible representations with meridian , , . This is imported in its actual varying-meridian scope; neither isolated representation existence nor the local analytic complex is substituted for it.
External inputs: Baldwin–Sivek, arXiv:2405.19197v2, Theorem 2.7 and Corollary 2.8 (p.6) give boundedness of the FULL SU2-abelian slope set, its unique rational limit with , the stated one-sided instanton L-space surgery range, and the knot-or-mirror instanton L-space conclusion. Theorems 2.1–2.2 and Corollary 2.3 (pp.4–5) give fiberedness, alternating nonzero unit Alexander coefficients, and the additional adjacent highest terms . Lemma 2.4, Proposition 2.16 and Proposition 3.1 give precisely the satellite restrictions with their displayed winding, pattern and companion hypotheses; Lemmas 5.3–5.4 give the filling transfers. The classical knot trichotomy used in their Proposition 2.15 and proofs in §§4–5 is imported at that knot-exterior scope: a nontrivial nontorus nonsatellite knot is hyperbolic. No arbitrary atoroidal manifold assertion is inferred from a definition. These are established external results, not new local proofs of their gauge or hyperbolization foundations.
Reading boundary: the cited primary theorem statements, hypotheses and Corollary 2.3 proof were consulted directly. The gauge-theoretic proofs underlying [L1]–[L2] have not been reconstructed here. Their use is authorized by the run-specific external-source rule; the accepted local filling and slope arguments remain in place.
Proof
The exact full slope set. Write . Its elements are DISTINCT slopes, not a selected sequence. The meridional slope is isolated and is not a finite-surgery parameter in this set. A simultaneous peripheral diagonalization of an SU2 representation gives and . The simultaneous inversion is the pillowcase quotient. For any continuous lifted path through peripheral images of irreducible representations, a slope in satisfies : equality would give an actual irreducible representation of the filled group, contradicting [F1]. Continuity puts this entire real function in one component of . Thus for ANY two points of that path, This is a full-set exclusion, valid for positive, negative and zero numerators.
The exact instanton interface selects a nonvertical path. Under [L1], its first alternative makes empty: for any finite choose modulo on that full vertical circle, giving an actual irreducible filling representation. Hence an SU2-averse knot, for which is infinite, must satisfy the second alternative. On a smaller closed subinterval its meridian is noncentral and already diagonal. Its commuting longitude is diagonal too; its eigenvalue is a continuous circle-valued function, so subdivision into finitely many open semicircle charts gives a continuous real lift . The meridian coordinate has distinct endpoint values. This is the ONLY use of [L1] in the subsequent path argument; no bare nontrivial-knot representation-existence assertion is silently substituted for its varying-meridian conclusion.
Boundedness of ALL slopes. Fix such a nonvertical path and endpoints, put , and . Step1.1 gives for EVERY . Thus the full set is contained in the fixed bounded interval ; an unbounded exceptional subsequence is excluded. In a bounded interval there are only finitely many reduced fractions with denominator at most any fixed : for each only finitely many integers satisfy the interval bound. Consequently, along EVERY sequence of pairwise distinct elements of , and the displayed inequality forces . The infinite set therefore has exactly one accumulation point in , namely the finite . This proves both quantifiers needed when passing to arbitrary infinite subsets.
All lifted paths are straight and parallel. Apply step1.1 to any two points of any continuous lifted irreducible peripheral path and to a sequence of distinct elements of the FULL set. Divide by and use step3.1 to obtain Thus is constant on each path, and any nonconstant one lies on a line of slope . In particular the varying-meridian path of step2.1 contains every point of a nontrivial interval of that line: its coordinate covers the whole endpoint interval by continuity. No finite-component or semialgebraic path-selection assertion is required for this implication.
A nonzero Laurent equation actually vanishes on this arc. For completeness the needed image-dimension operation is the accepted field-linear adjoint calculation [F2], not an assumption that the A-polynomial Definition excludes larger images. If a generic irreducible eigenline-incidence component had algebraically independent , its function field would admit two derivations independently differentiating ; extend these through its finite separable algebraic part by the minimal-polynomial derivative formula. The actual boundary homology has dimension two. Self-duality and the pair exact sequence make both boundary inclusion and cohomological restriction rank one. The actual word/eigenbasis pairing therefore puts ALL logarithmic derivative pairs in the same line, contradicting those two independent derivations. Reducible components have by knot abelianization. All peripheral images thus have dimension at most one. The finitely many zero-dimensional image components give only finitely many points. The nonconstant interval of step4.1, after discarding these points, lies in the union of the one-dimensional image curves; hence the nonzero Laurent polynomial in [F3] vanishes on it. By continuity it vanishes on the entire interval. This argument allows arbitrary dimensions of the underlying character components and does not confuse a one-parameter family with a maximal image component.
Rationality by a finite exponential calculation. Write , with finite distinct integral pairs and nonzero coefficients. On the interval , , step5.1 gives If were irrational, all real numbers would be distinct: equality for different pairs would either force identical pairs or express as a ratio of integers. Differentiate this finite identity times at an interior point. Its coefficient matrix is a Vandermonde matrix in the distinct numbers , multiplied by nonzero diagonal exponentials. Its determinant is nonzero, forcing every , contrary to their choice. Thus . This proves rationality without importing a transcendence-number theorem or claiming arithmetic algebraicity of isolated pillowcase points.
Full package with explicit external inputs. Steps1.1–6.1 prove the elementary full-set boundedness, uniqueness and rationality operation from [L1]. The actual alternative is now supplied externally by [L1], while [L2] supplies the additional nonzero bound, L-space surgery, fiberedness, Alexander and satellite interfaces. The accepted filling and closed-lift operations [F4], together with the external knot-exterior trichotomy in [L2], give the geometric reductions required in §§3–5. These establish all four parts of the original package under its stated hypotheses. This completion uses external gauge and classification results; it does not assert local reconstructions of those results.
