How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

The product Milnor bundle is numerable, and has its ordinary countable CW topology. For closed , is a compact smooth manifold; the local finite-nerve lemma gives it CW type. The quotient is a numerable locally trivial bundle with compact fiber . The compact-fiber bundle theorem therefore makes paracompact Hausdorff, CGWH, and of CW type. Also is a locally trivial principal -bundle. Milnor's join model is a contractible free G-space The universal complex flag bundle is BT-n Quotient manifold by a closed Lie subgroup The fixed-locus Borel base is paracompact and of CW type A compact smooth manifold has a finite good-cover nerve model Compact-fibre bundle totals preserve paracompactness, and CW type under CW-type hypotheses Locally trivial fiber bundle Principal g bundle and associated fiber bundle
For a path-connected paracompact Hausdorff CGWH space of CW type, the first Chern class identifies numerable complex-line-bundle classes with , is natural under pullback, and sends the trivial line to zero; coefficient change preserves this conclusion. The first Chern class classifies complex line bundles First Chern class of tensor, dual, and conjugate lines
Singular cohomology of a pair has its long exact sequence, and Mayer–Vietoris applies to open covers. The localization functor preserves short exact sequences by the linked module-localization lemma; splitting an exact sequence at each image and kernel therefore shows that it preserves exactness of the Mayer–Vietoris sequence. A closed subspace of a compact space is compact. A closed subspace of a compact space is compact, and a finite union of compact subspaces is compact
Homotopic maps induce the same singular cohomology pullback with field coefficients. An equivariant homotopy descends to a homotopy of the Borel quotient maps. Homotopy invariance of singular cohomology with field coefficients
Proof
Given: The data in the statement.
If , use [F1] to choose an equivariant tubular disk and let , where denotes the image of the smaller open disk. This is closed in compact , hence compact by [F6]. Every is nonfixed, so its stabilizer is a proper closed subgroup. If , set ; it is compact and every point is nonfixed. If , then . For each , [F1] gives an open invariant orbit tube with all stabilizers contained in ; compactness gives a finite subcover of . For , the sphere bundle is compact: cover the compact base by finitely many relatively compact bundle charts; over each compact chart closure the sphere fiber is compact, and the finitely many resulting compact sets cover .
Fix a tube with proper orbit stabilizer . By [F2], choose a nontrivial character that is trivial on . Consider any invariant subspace , with its subspace topology. Its inverse image in the slice has the form for an -invariant subspace . The Borel identification is the homeomorphism from to , with inverse ; the quotient relations show both maps are well-defined. Write . The map is the associated quotient bundle , and [F4] gives its compact-fiber CW-type and paracompactness properties. Since is numerable, this associated quotient bundle is numerable as well: its local product charts over each Milnor chart retain the same subordinate partition. By [F4], is locally a principal -bundle: over a Milnor -chart it has form , and local sections of the Lie quotient give the principal -charts. The projection pulls back to the associated line ; the explicit trivialization is well-defined because . Thus this is a numerable trivial line bundle, using its global chart and the constant partition . The space is path-connected as a continuous image of contractible , so [F5] applies and its first Chern class is zero. Under the Borel identification, the projection factors through , and the character class on is the pullback of this zero class. It therefore acts as zero on . As is nontrivial, this class becomes invertible in , and the localized module is zero.
Let be any finite family of invariant open subsets, with each an orbit tube as above. We prove by induction on . It holds for by step 1.2. For , put and . By induction the localized cohomology of is zero, and step 1.2 gives zero for . The intersection is invariant and open, so step 1.2 also gives zero for it. The Borel quotients of invariant open sets are open, since the quotient map is open (the saturation of an open set is the union of its -translates). Thus Mayer–Vietoris applies to the Borel open cover. To see that localization preserves its long exactness, split the sequence at each image/kernel into short exact module sequences and apply [F8] to each; exactness of the localized pieces then gives exactness at every Mayer–Vietoris term. The segment from the localized through to the localized has zero end terms, forcing the middle term to vanish in every degree.
If , then and all its singular cochain groups are zero by [F3], so the claim holds. Otherwise let with the relative topology. These are invariant open subsets of and cover it, since the cover and . Under the slice diffeomorphism , has the form , where is an -invariant subspace. The generalized local calculation in step 1.2 gives . The Borel images of the are open in : each is the image of the open invariant subspace under the orbit quotient, which is open. Repeat the finite-cover Mayer–Vietoris induction of step 2.1 on this relative-open cover. At each stage the new intersection is an invariant subspace of the newest orbit tube, so step 1.2 makes its localized equivariant cohomology zero; localization preserves exactness by [F8]. Hence .
Apply step 2.1 with and then with ; this shows the open union and have zero localized equivariant cohomology. The punctured tube equivariantly deformation retracts onto by radial interpolation . The paths stay in the disk because both endpoint radii are strictly below . By step 3.1, ; [F7] and the equivariant deformation retraction therefore give . Now , and their intersection is covered by the open sets ; step 2.1 makes this intersection localized-acyclic as well. A final localized Mayer–Vietoris sequence gives . If , the finite tube union covers all and step 2.1 applies directly; if , the complement is empty.
