How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Oriented crossing signs, diagram writhe, and blackboard framing
Definition
Assume for the smooth normal-bundle structure used in the framing clause. For a knot component , its normal bundle is the fibrewise quotient , and a normal section is a smooth section of this bundle.
Let be a regular oriented link diagram in a projection plane of an oriented -sphere, after moving the link off the point at infinity. Fix the unit viewing normal pointing toward the viewer. Orient by the rule that an ordered basis of is positive exactly when is a positive basis of the ambient -space. At a crossing , let and be the nonzero projected tangent vectors following the orientations of the overpassing and underpassing strands. Define Reversing the orientation of reverses every crossing sign.
This convention makes the positive geometric Artin half twist positive. In the braid chart with ambient orientation , view along ; the induced positive orientation of the projection plane is the ordered basis . For the positive half twist, label moves from to below the midpoint, while label moves from to above it, with . Thus the over and under projected tangent vectors in coordinates are and , whose determinant is .
The writhe of is For a link component , its self-writhe is the sum over crossings whose two branches belong to ; the total writhe also includes all mixed crossings between distinct components.
The blackboard framing of a component of is the homotopy class of the normal section represented by the positive quarter-turn in of the projected oriented tangent. The projection is an immersion, so this vector never vanishes; it is perpendicular to the projected tangent, hence also to the spatial tangent, and therefore represents a nonzero normal section of the component in the ambient -sphere.
In the displayed local chart, the over tangent is the positive horizontal vector and the under tangent is the positive vertical vector, so the determinant is . This figure illustrates the determinant rule only; no proof below depends on a picture.
