How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Locally split Cech nerves give actual derived Cartesian sheaf descent

Statement

Assume AC. For a strict augmented simplicial space Z∙→S, its category of simplicial analytic k-sheaves has explicit coinduced injective resolutions. The derived augmentation is computed by a normalized double complex; before normalization its spectral sequence has first page Rjqp∗Fp and alternating face differential. A common internal lower bound makes every total-degree diagonal finite. The same construction works for strict bisimplicial diagrams and is compatible with composition of derived right adjoints to exact inverse image. If Z∙ is the Čech nerve of a map P→S admitting local sections, inverse image gives an equivalence from Db(Sh⁡k(S)) to the full derived subcategory with Cartesian cohomology. For algebraic principal GL bundles of separated finite-type complex varieties (Zariski locally trivial bundles) this restricts to the algebraically constructible subcategories, with constructibility required at every simplicial level.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: A strict augmented simplicial space Z∙→S: spaces Zp with continuous maps Zα:Zm→Zp for every monotone α:[p]→[m], and an augmentation to the constant simplicial space S with components qp:Zp→S satisfying qp∘Zα=qm; the field k; the category of simplicial analytic k-sheaves as defined in step 1.1; the Axiom of Choice The Axiom of Choice; the bounded derived category and derived Hom conventions of Derived category of an abelian category, Sheaf cohomology as right derived global sections and Direct sum total complex of a double complex. All sheaf categories are over the constant ringed space with structure sheaf k.

[F1]

Sheaf categories and exactness (A sheaf on a topological space, Presheaves and sheaves of groups, rings, and modules, Modules on a ringed space, Sheaves of abelian groups, and likewise sheaves of modules on a ringed space, form abelian categories, A sequence of abelian sheaves is exact exactly when it is exact on every stalk): Sh⁡k(Zp) is the abelian category of modules over (Zp,k) with k-linear morphisms; a sequence is exact exactly when it is exact on every stalk; kernels, cokernels and finite sums are formed sectionwise with sheafification for cokernels, and arbitrary products and coproducts of sheaves exist. For diagrams they are formed levelwise, using the canonical map from inverse image of a product to the product of the inverse images.

[F2]

Inverse and direct image (Inverse image presheaf and inverse image sheaf, Direct image of a sheaf along a continuous map, Direct image preserves sheaves and objectwise algebraic structure, Inverse image is left adjoint to direct image on sheaves): for continuous f, f−1 is left adjoint to f∗, f−1 is exact by stalkwise exactness, and f∗ preserves injectives because its left adjoint is exact; f∗ is precomposition with f−1 on opens and sends sheaves to sheaves.

[F3]

Injective models (Analytic field sheaves have injective derived models, Injective complexes model the bounded below derived category, A bounded below complex of injectives is homotopically injective, Homotopically injective bounded below complex, Morphisms into a homotopically injective complex need no roof): under AC every Sh⁡k(Zp) has a functorial injective embedding and functorial injective resolutions, bounded-below injective complexes are K-injective, and morphisms into such a complex are homotopy classes of chain maps without roofs. In any abelian category with enough injectives, Bounded below complexes admit injective replacements supplies a termwise injective replacement preserving a supplied lower bound under DC.

[F4]

Products of injectives (A coproduct of projectives is projective and a product of injectives is injective): in an abelian category with AB3 and AB3*, finite products of injectives are injective, and arbitrary small products of injectives are injective under AC.

[F5]

Double complexes and totalization (Cochain complex in an abelian category, Direct sum total complex of a double complex, The total differential squares to zero, The cohomological filtered complex construction): a double complex with commuting square-zero differentials has a total complex with square-zero differential after multiplying the vertical differential in horizontal degree p by (−1)p; a decreasing filtration of a complex with finite filtrations of each degree gives a convergent spectral sequence abutting to the cohomology; finitely many nonzero terms on each diagonal make the totalization a finite construction in each degree.

[F6]

Derived conventions (Canonical truncation of a complex, Canonical truncations fit a distinguished triangle, The derived category inherits a triangulated structure, Bounded derived localizations embed fully faithfully): canonical truncation triangles build a bounded complex from its cohomology sheaves; the derived category is triangulated with long exact cohomology sequences; the bounded derived category embeds fully faithfully in the unbounded one.

[F7]

Choice (The Axiom of Choice, AC implies DC implies countable choice): AC supplies dependent choice, hence the successive homotopy and lifting choices in the injective-model constructions.

[F8]

Algebraic constructibility (Algebraically constructible complexes of analytic field sheaves): bounded algebraically constructible complexes have bounded cohomology locally constant of finite rank on a finite smooth algebraic frontier stratification. The partition construction of Complex algebraic morphisms admit compatible finite smooth stratifications, applied to a map to a point and to the closures and boundaries of finitely many locally closed algebraic sets, supplies a finite smooth frontier refinement respecting those sets.

[F9]

Extension by zero (Extension by zero is left adjoint to restriction and is exact on abelian sheaves): for an open subspace the functor j! is exact and left adjoint to restriction; this is the declared ambient exactness input of the design and is available if a local open-subspace model is written out.

The category and the augmentation. A simplicial sheaf consists of the Fp and maps Zα−1Fp→Fm specified in the Given, with identity and composition identities. Since inverse image is exact, kernels, cokernels and exactness are levelwise; products and coproducts are levelwise with the induced structure maps, so this is an abelian, locally small category with AB3 and AB3*. Define q∗B levelwise by qp−1B, and define q∗F as the equalizer of the two face maps q0∗F0⇉q1∗F1. A map into this equalizer gives compatible maps at every level by the vertex projections: the equalizer condition makes all vertex choices agree, and the simplicial identities give compatibility with every operator. The inverse/direct-image adjunction therefore gives q∗⊣q∗; q∗ is exact.

Coinduction and levelwise injectivity. Set (NpI)m=∏α:[m]→[p](Zα)∗I, with structure maps induced by composition. The identity component gives Hom⁡(F,NpI)=Hom⁡(Fp,I); hence NpI is injective for injective I. Functorial embeddings Fp↪Ip give F↪∏pNpIp, detected by the identity component at each level. AC and [F4] make this product injective. Each level of NpI is a finite product of direct images of injectives, hence injective by [F2], [F4]; the same holds for each level of ∏pNpIp. Any injective simplicial sheaf is a retract of its such embedding and is consequently injective at each level. Iteration on cokernels resolves sheaves; the bounded-below replacement construction of [F3], using these explicit embeddings at its successive stages, resolves complexes without changing a supplied lower bound.

The augmented cochain complex of an injective. For NpI put A=qp∗I. Its degree-m augmentation cochains are AHom⁡Δ([m],[p]), with the alternating face differential. The augmentation A→Ap+1 sends a to the constant tuple. On cochains define (hc)(i0,…,im−1)=c(0,i0,…,im−1) and in degree zero evaluate at vertex 0. Deleting the inserted vertex gives the identity and all other deletions cancel in pairs, so dh+hd=id on the augmented complex. Products of these contractions and their restrictions to retracts give an exact augmented complex 0→q∗J→q0∗J0→q1∗J1→⋯ for every injective simplicial sheaf J. This is horizontal exactness, not a claim that the derived functors vanish on an arbitrary pulled-back complex.

Ordinary Cartesian descent. Cartesian means that every structure map is an isomorphism. For a Cartesian sheaf F and a local section si:Vi→P, put Bi=si−1F0. The two face maps to F1 identify the pullbacks of F0 along the two projections. Pulling this identification back by z↦(si(q(z)),z) gives q−1Bi≃F0 over q−1Vi; vertex projections then give qp−1Bi≃Fp. On overlaps, pull the same identification back by (si,sj):Vi∩Vj→P×SP. The degree-two identities give the cocycle equation on triple overlaps, and the diagonal degeneracy gives the identity equation. The sheaf axiom glues the Bi to B on S and their identifications to q∗B≃F. The same construction glues morphisms, so it is an equivalence of ordinary sheaf categories onto Cartesian sheaves.

Normalization. For a cosimplicial abelian object C set NnC=⋂i=0n−1ker⁡si and TrCn=⋂i=0min⁡(r,n)−1ker⁡si, so T0C=C. The alternating differential preserves Tr: applying si to it cancels the ith and (i+1)st faces, and all remaining terms contain si−1 or si. In degree n>r, the map sr carries TrCn into TrCn−1 and vanishes on Tr+1. For c∈TrCn the cosimplicial identities give (dsr+srd)c=∑j=0r(−1)jdjsrc. Multiplying by (−1)r gives c modulo Tr+1: all earlier codegeneracies vanish on the difference, and applying sr kills the terms j<r and identifies the last term with src. Thus (−1)rsr contracts the quotient Tr/Tr+1, with zero maps where n≤r and the quotient is zero. Each inclusion Tr+1↪Tr is a quasi-isomorphism. For a fixed cohomological degree n, these complexes stabilize in degrees n−1,n,n+1 once r≥n+1, giving NC↪C a quasi-isomorphism. Finally, successively applying 1−di+1si for i=0,…,n−1 gives a natural projection onto NnC: it kills the ith codegeneracy and preserves those already killed. A surjection of cosimplicial objects lifts a normalized element by first lifting it and then applying this projection; kernels are immediate. Hence Nn is exact, and the normalized first page is Np(Rjq∙∗F∙), rather than the unnormalized term Rjqp∗Fp.

The derived total model. Choose F→J as in step 1.2, with Jj=0 for j<a. Put Dp,j=qp∗Jpj and total differential dh+(−1)pdv, where dh is the alternating face differential. The differentials commute before this sign, so the total differential squares to zero. Step 2.1 identifies the horizontal cohomology with q∗Jj in horizontal degree zero; filtering the bounded-below double complex therefore identifies its total with q∗J, which represents Rq∗F. Levelwise injectivity from step 1.2 identifies vertical cohomology with Rjqp∗Fp. Filtration by the simplicial degree p gives the unnormalized first page E1p,j=Rjqp∗Fp and its alternating face differential. Only 0≤p≤n−a occurs in total degree n, so [F5] gives convergence without completion. Step 3.1 normalizes the horizontal direction without changing the total object. This model also works with any bounded-below levelwise injective replacement: resolve its terms further in the simplicial category and use the vertical acyclic-resolution comparison; finite diagonal filtrations identify both totals.

5.1F2F3F5step 2.1step 4.1

Bisimplicial diagrams and composition. Coinduce in both simplicial directions, using products indexed by pairs of operators. The two contractions of step 2.1 identify the doubly augmented total with the derived augmentation. With indices p,r≥0 and j≥a, only finitely many triples satisfy p+r+j=n; hence iterated and simultaneous totals agree, with differential signs dp+(−1)pdr+(−1)p+rdj. For a composition of right adjoints f∗,g∗ whose inverse-image left adjoints are exact, both right adjoints preserve injectives. A single injective replacement J therefore computes R(gf)∗F=g∗f∗J and Rg∗Rf∗F alike. The comparison respects units and counits because the underived adjunctions compose; its total models are the finite-diagonal models just constructed.

5.2F2F3F4F9step 1.2step 4.1algebra

A local section contracts the derived model. For the Čech nerve over a section domain V, set Z−1=V and e−1=s. Inserting s as first coordinate gives ep:Zp∣V→Zp+1∣V with d0ep=id and di+1ep=ep−1di (including the augmentation). The augmented diagram qp−1B, with value B∣V at level −1, has canonical structure maps also for these insertions. Resolve it in the enlarged small diagram category generated by the ordinary operators and the ep, with their actual relations. The construction of step 1.2 applies there: coinduction uses products over arrows, and every evaluation of an injective is injective, since each coinduced evaluation is a product of direct images of injectives. Thus we obtain a bounded-below resolution J which retains all ep and is injective at every level, including −1. The insertion maps induce h:qp+1∗Jp+1→qp∗Jp, with q0∗J0→J−1 induced by s. The displayed face identities give dhh+hdh=id on each augmented row, and h commutes with dv. They therefore contract the augmented total, which by step 4.1 computes the derived augmentation. Its level-−1 complex resolves B∣V, so the actual unit B∣V→Rq∗q∗B∣V is an isomorphism. Restriction to V preserves injectives in the simplicial category: levelwise extension by zero is an exact left adjoint, with structure maps obtained from pullback of extension by zero along the operators. The local calculations consequently compute the restriction of the global unit. They glue to B≃Rq∗q∗B; for a sheaf B this implies Rjq∗q∗B=0 for j>0.

6.1F2F6step 5.2step 2.2

Derived full faithfulness and the image. Derived adjunction and step 5.2 give Hom⁡D(q∗A,q∗B)=Hom⁡D(A,Rq∗q∗B)=Hom⁡D(A,B). By [F6] this also holds in bounded derived categories. Exactness of q∗ shows that its image has Cartesian cohomology. Conversely, step 2.2 descends each cohomology sheaf of a bounded object with Cartesian cohomology. Induct on the finitely many nonzero cohomology degrees, using the canonical truncation triangles of [F6]. At each stage full faithfulness lifts the connecting morphism between the already descended objects; its cone realizes the next truncation. Cone triangles with the same connecting morphism are isomorphic by the triangulated axioms, so this induction realizes the original object.

7.1F2F8step 2.2step 6.1

Algebraic constructibility. An algebraic principal GL bundle here is Zariski locally trivial; finite type allows a finite algebraic trivializing cover Vi with algebraic sections si. Inverse image of a locally constant finite-rank sheaf is locally constant of the same finite rank: pull back a trivialization and use the stalk formula. More generally, inverse image along an algebraic map preserves algebraic constructibility. Indeed, the inverse images of a witnessing stratification form a finite partition by locally closed algebraic sets; apply the finite smooth frontier refinement of [F8] to their closures and boundaries. On each resulting stratum the sheaf is the inverse image of one of the original local systems. This argument applies to qp and to si. Thus if F0 is algebraically constructible, the descended B is so on each Vi. For a single global witnessing stratification, regard all the local strata as locally closed subsets of S, prescribe their closures and boundaries and the complements of the Vi, and refine by [F8]; every global stratum lies inside one Vi and one local stratum. There are only finitely many cohomology degrees, so one such refinement handles them all. Conversely, if B is constructible, every qp∗B is constructible by the same argument. This proves the restriction of step 6.1 to objects constructible at each simplicial level; no common finite stratification across infinitely many levels is assumed.

Steps 1.2 and 4.1 give the coinduced resolutions and derived augmentation model, step 5.1 gives the bisimplicial and composition clauses, and steps 5.2, 6.1 and 7.1 give locally split Cartesian descent and its algebraic restriction. AC is used for injective data, products of injectives, DC for complex replacements, and the algebraic refinement supplier. No proper-descent conclusion is inferred from local-section descent.
